efa’s for skin health
Why are Essential Fatty Acids “essential” for healthy skin?
EFA’s are a building block of the cell wall for every cell in the body.
The cell wall keeps cellular fluid inside the cell walls, and prevents unwanted matter from entering.
EFA’s are not produced within the body, and must be introduced by diet (oily fish, eggs, butter, avocados, olive oil, nuts) and Supplements.
Once a skin cell matures and breaks down, the Essential fatty acids that made up the cell wall remain in the skin layers to create the acid mantle.
The acid mantle is the protective layer of the skin, it prevents Water loss - keeping skin well hydrated.
Most people assume that if their skin is dehydrated, its due to the amount of water we drink, however, water in the skin only accounts for about 13% of our skins hydration.
The main cause of dehydrated skin is a weakened Acid Mantle. And how to we re-build and strengthen our acid mantle?
By providing skin cells with strong cell walls! And how do we produce cells with healthy cell walls? We ensure that we are consuming adequate amounts of Essential fatty acids.
A weakened acid mantle and dehydration has a domino effect on a whole range of skin disorders including:
Skin feeling tight, taut, flaky and rough
Dehydration lines
Skin irritation
Dull skin
Uneven skin tone
Hyperpigmentation
Redness
Skin feeling heat
Rashes/itchy skin
Breakouts/acne-prone skin
Sensitivity or inflamed skin
A delayed wound healing response
Bacterial or fungal infections like peri dermatitis
Make Rosacea and eczema more severe
If you are experiencing any of the above skin conditions, you may well be lacking in Essential Fatty Acids.
